Level 3 Paediatric First Aid (RQF)
The Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid introduces the techniques, skills and decisions that will be needed by childcare practitioners. The skills and knowledge will be taught in a realistic childcare context.
Unit 1: Emergency Paediatric First Aid
Roles and responsibilities of the first aider
Minimising risk in an emergency situation
Accident procedures
Safe Airway Positions
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Safe use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs)
First aid for seizures and febrile convulsions
First aid for choking
Treatment for bleeding and shock
Appropriate First Aid Kit Use
Completing accident forms
Unit 2: Managing Paediatric Illness, Injuries & Emergencies
Conduct a secondary survey
First aid for fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
Head injuries including concussion and compression
Managing a casualty with a potential spinal injuries
Chest injuries
Anaphylaxis - dealing with a severe allergic reaction and correct use of adrenaline auto - injector pens
Managing medical conditions in schools, such as asthma and diabetes
First aid for burns and scalds
Eye injuries
First aid for poisoning
Awareness of meningitis
First aid for minor injuries, bumps and bruises, nosebleeds and splinters
Course Duration & Assessment
The training and assessment typically consists of a 2-day (12 hour) course leading to the full Paediatric First Aid qualification.
There is no test at the end of this course as skills and knowledge for this qualification are assessed continuously by tutor observation of ‘real-life’ skills which have been benchmarked to National Occupational Standards.
This certificate has a valid ‘license to practice’ lifetime of three years. Certificate renewal is by completion of another First Aid at Work qualification.
